About This Tool
Headers and footers carry the information a page needs to make sense on its own once it is printed and separated from the rest: which document it belongs to, which version, which date, and who produced it.
You get three slots each in the header and footer - left, centre and right - and can put static text or a dynamic field in any of them. Dynamic fields fill themselves in per page: the page number, the total page count, or the date in your chosen format.
Font, size and margin are adjustable, so the added text can be sized down to sit unobtrusively above or below the existing layout rather than crowding it.
How to Use
Load the PDF
Drop in the document you want to annotate.
Fill in the slots
Type text into any of the six positions. Insert page number, page count or date fields where you want them filled automatically.
Set the type
Choose font, size and margin so the text clears the existing content.
Apply and download
Check the preview and save the updated document.
Use Cases
Version control on paper
A footer reading v2.4, reviewed 14 March means nobody works from last month printout.
Running heads in long reports
The chapter title in the header keeps readers oriented 90 pages in.
File references for archiving
A case or matter number in every footer, so a loose page can always be traced back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which dynamic fields are available?
Current page, total pages, and the date in several formats. They are resolved per page when the file is written.
Can the header differ on the first page?
Apply to a page range to exclude the cover, then run the tool again with different text for that page.
Will this overlap the existing content?
It can on tightly laid out pages. Increase the margin or reduce the font size; the preview shows the result first.
Do I use this or the page numbers tool?
Use Add Page Numbers if numbering is all you need - it has more control over sequences. Use this when you also want titles, dates or references.
