About This Tool

Bookmarks help on screen. They do nothing once a document is printed and sitting in a binder, which is why reports, tenders and dissertations still need a contents page inside the file.

This tool builds that page. If the PDF already has a bookmark tree, the entries and page numbers are pulled from it automatically. If not, type the entries yourself. The generated page is inserted at the front, with dot leaders running out to right-aligned page numbers, and each line is a live link when read on screen.

You can control the heading text, indentation per level, and whether to include page numbers - useful when the document will be repaginated later.

How to Use

  1. Load the document

Drop in the PDF. Existing bookmarks are detected and offered as the source for entries.

  2. Choose or type the entries

Generate from bookmarks, or enter titles and page numbers by hand for documents with no outline.

  3. Set the style

Pick the heading, indent depth for subsections, and whether dot leaders and page numbers appear.

  4. Insert and download

The contents page is added at the front and the updated PDF downloads.

Use Cases

Reports that get printed

A board pack goes out on paper. The contents page is the only navigation a reader in the room has.

Theses and formal submissions

Most style guides require a contents page with page numbers. Generate it from bookmarks instead of typing it twice.

Merged bundles

After combining eight documents, add a contents page so readers know what the 200 pages contain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the contents page shift my page numbers?

Yes - inserting a page pushes everything back by one. The generated entries account for this, so the numbers printed on the page are correct for the new document.

Are the entries clickable?

Yes. Each line links to its target page when the file is opened in a reader, and prints as plain text on paper.

What if I have no bookmarks?

Type the entries manually, or build a bookmark tree first with the Bookmarks tool and then generate from it.

Can the contents run to more than one page?

Yes. Long outlines flow onto additional pages automatically and the page numbering adjusts.
