About This Tool

TIFF matters in document imaging for one reason above the others: a single TIFF file can hold every page of a document. Records systems, fax gateways and archival workflows are often built around exactly that, and will reject a folder of individual images.

You can export one multi-page TIFF for the whole document, or separate files per page when the receiving system prefers that. Compression is selectable - LZW for general lossless use, CCITT Group 4 for bitonal scans destined for fax or archival systems, or none where the requirement says so.

TIFF is also the format most commonly specified in long-term preservation policies, because it is simple, lossless and has been readable by everything for thirty years.

How to Use

  1. Load the PDF

Drop in up to 10 files.

  2. Choose single or multi-page output

One TIFF containing all pages, or one file per page.

  3. Set DPI and compression

300 DPI with Group 4 is the standard combination for bitonal archival scans.

  4. Convert and download

    Save the TIFF output.

Use Cases

Document management ingestion

Records systems that expect one multi-page TIFF per document.

Fax gateways

CCITT Group 4 bitonal TIFF is what fax systems are built around.

Long-term preservation

Archival policies frequently name TIFF as the required master format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get all pages in one file?

Yes. Multi-page TIFF is the main reason to use this format, and it is the default here.

Which compression should I choose?

LZW for general lossless use. CCITT Group 4 for black-and-white scans, which is what fax and archival systems expect. None only if a specification demands it.

What DPI do archival standards require?

Commonly 300 DPI for text documents, sometimes 600 for material with fine detail. Check the specific policy you are working to.

Is TIFF lossless?

With LZW, PackBits or Group 4, yes. TIFF can also hold JPEG-compressed data, which is not.
