PNG is lossless, which is exactly what you want when the page is mostly text, a chart or line art. JPEG compression leaves visible halos and mottling around sharp black-on-white edges; PNG produces none of that, so screenshots of documents stay crisp.
PNG also supports transparency. Rendering a page with a transparent background is how you get a diagram or a logo out of a PDF and onto a coloured slide without a white box around it.
The trade-off is size. A photographic page as PNG can be several times larger than the same page as JPG. For pages that are mostly photographs, use PDF to JPG instead.
