BMP stores pixels with essentially no compression, which is why a single scanned page can occupy 25 MB. Files in this format usually come from older Windows software, medical or industrial imaging systems, and scanner drivers that were configured a decade ago and never revisited.
Converting to PDF applies proper image compression during embedding, and the size drop is dramatic - often 90 percent or more with no visible difference, because there was no compression to lose in the first place.
You also get one document instead of a folder of individual bitmaps, which makes the collection far easier to store, index and send.

How much smaller will the PDF be?
Typically 85 to 95 percent smaller. BMP is uncompressed, so almost all of the size is redundancy.
Does the image quality suffer?
At high quality settings the difference is not visible. Lower settings trade sharpness for size in the usual way.
Are 1-bit and 8-bit bitmaps supported?
Yes - monochrome, greyscale, palette and full-colour BMPs all convert.
Can I mix BMP with other formats?
